Meet our Youth Exchange Student
Each year the Club sponsors an International student for a school year. The student attends a local high school. The local students learn so much from the international student. Then too, the Club members also get educated as he/she visits our club regularly. Many times the parents visit us and see our Club and our City. All in all, this project adds – even if just a little - towards world understanding and world peace. This year we are so pleased to learn about Austria as we host Julian Schütz. Club wins Regional Award
The Rotary Club of St. John’s Northwest was recognized for its outstanding work at the annual Rotary District Conference held in Antigonish, Nova Scotia from May 7 through 9.

Northwest Rotary, which celebrates its 44th birthday this year, received a Presidential Citation award, a Membership Development Award and the most prestigious award for any Rotary Club, the Outstanding Club Award for 2008-2009. The award was accepted by Wendy Scammell, Club President 2008-2009.
In presenting the award, District Governor Doug Logan cited the Rotary Club of St. John’s Northwest for achieving growth of 12% in its membership and raising in excess of $250,000 in a three-year-period through the annual Northwest Rotary Gala Dinner & Auction.
“It was one of the proudest moments of my life”, said President Wendy Scammell of her experience. “I just wish that all 73 of our members could have been there to accept it with me.”
The Rotary District is made up of 46 Rotary Clubs and 1800 Rotarians from the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Isles de la Madeleine in Quebec and Saint-Pierre et Miquelon.
Scammell was among a contingent of 7 Rotarians from the St. John’s Norwest Rotary Club who attended the conference, which was held on the St. Francis Xavier University campus.

Community Environmental Project – East Coast Trail Clean-up
In 2008, members of the Rotary Club of St. John's Northwest coordinated their efforts in a joint environmental clean-up program with the City of St. John's and the East Coast Trail Association (ECTA). Our members trekked to a 500-metre portion of the Sugarloaf section of the East Coast trail. The area had been featured in the media showing the deplorable level of garbage (especially plastic bags) in what is intended to be a beautiful hiking trail. The "plastic forest" is the result of garbage blown in from the nearby Robin Hood Bay landfill area. Who knows what project the environment team will do next! Click to read more.

Buckmaster’s Circle Project – New Recreation Space for Children
St. John’s Northwest Rotary has embarked on a Special Project supporting the development of an outdoor recreation space in the Buckmaster's Circle neighbourhood of St. John's. The site of the new park is a 4.6 acre undeveloped area right in the heart of the city's centre where over 240 children under the age of 14 years have no open air space available for play. Proceeds from our Celebrity Gala Dinner and Auction Event in 2008 and 2007 were used to provide seed funding to the project. Click to read more.
International Project Success – Centre for Children’s Happiness, Cambodia
For the past two years, the Rotary Club of St. John's Northwest presented checks ($13,000 (US) and $5100 (US) respectively) to the Centre for Children's Happiness in Cambodia. The Centre provides a home and education to 140 children. The children are either orphans or belong to parents who cannot take care of them due to illness or disability. Now that we have helped with shelter and schooling we are moving to vocational education. The children are growing up (safely and happily) and it is time to plan for independence and employment so we are supporting training at the orphanage. We recently purchased computers and sewing machines. Click here to read more.
