Community Support
The Rotary Club of St. John's Northwest is proud to support the work of other organizations in our community. We have recently supported the following:
- Our club is a key sponsor of the Canadian Mental Health Association's Changing Minds project in Newfoundland and Labrador. This two-year (2003-2005) initiative involves the development of a comprehensive education and training program for people who help those with mental health issues as part of their every-day working lives…police, ambulance workers, health care workers, clergy, family members and others. The resource materials will include a trainer's manual and videos dealing with specific mental health issues and will focus on the unique perspective of consumers of mental health services. $30,000.
- In 1999, we sponsored the production of Out of the Dark, a video on preventing teen suicide by the Canadian Mental Health Association's Newfoundland Division. $15,000.
- Newspapers in Education (a program of the Telegram) $5000
- Holy Cross School $1000 for dictionaries, thesauruses, library books
- McMorran Community Centre $1000
- Froude Avenue Community Centre $1200
- In 2004, Virginia Park Community Centre (Basic Shelf Workshops) $1200
- Christmas-time support for a needy family $1500 annually
- MUN Botanical Garden $5000 for an outdoor education facility in 2003.
- Medical equipment for hospitals and nursing homes (in the areas of cardiology, dialysis, thoracics, and geriatrics)
- Summer camp for physically challenged children
- Initiated a Cooperative Living Project for developmentally delayed young adults
