Community Service

Support of Charitable Community Efforts

The Rotary Club of St. John's Northwest is proud to support the work of other organizations in our community. Sometimes Rotary can have a greater community impact by boosting another established community group in using their own expertise and channels to complete an important piece of work. Below are some examples of initiatives we have recently support to benefit our local community and Province:

  1. $50,000: Daffodil Place

Our club provide $50,000 towards the building of Daffodil Place. Daffodil Place will be a new facility providing accommodations, meal services, emotional and practical support programs, access to information and in-treatment wellness programs to cancer patients needing to travel to St. John’s to receive care.

  2. $25,000: Marguerite’s Place

Our club committed $25,000 of funding towards a project called “Marguerite’s Place”. Marguerite’s Place will provide housing, programs and support services to women over 30 who have faced a number of complex challenges and may be living in vulnerable conditions.

  3. $10,000: H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation

Our club provided $10,000 towards the purchase of a new cervical cancer screening unit for Eastern Health. The new unit will enhance the accuracy and efficiency of tests to detect cancers of the cervix which will directly benefit the patients of the Province.

  4. $5,000 to the Expansion of the Roots of Empathy Program in St. John's.

Our club provided monies toward the expansion of the “Roots of Empathy Program”. The program brings mothers and their babies into the classroom to teach students about "Empathy". The “Emotional Literacy” taught in the program lays the foundation for more safe and caring classrooms and may lessen bullying and other hurtful behaviours in our schools.

  5. $4,000: Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador

Our club assisted the Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador in their development of a Public Resource Materials Centre so that people or family members affected by this disease (affecting 15% of adolescents and 1 in 5 post secondary students) can access supportive information. http://www.edfnl.ca/

  6. $4,000 to Virginia Park Elementary Music Program

Our club provided funds to aid in the development of the Virginia Park Elementary Music Program. The money was used to purchase musical instruments for the children.

  7. $1,500 to our St. John’s Rotary Northwest Memorial University Scholarship

Our annual scholarship is awarded each year to a full time student beyond first year pursuing a B.A. or a B.Sc. with a major in one of the Social Sciences who has demonstrated a commitment to community service.

  8. $1,000 to the Newfoundland and Labrador Division of The Duke of Edinburgh's Awards

COSTA stands for Challenging our Students to Achieve and encourages the participation of young people with cognitive disabilities.

We also provided Christmas-time donations to Corpus Christi St. Vincent DePaul, Buckmaster's Circle Community Centre, St. Theresa's Church and have contributed to CHHA-NL Adopt-a-classroom Program.
