Rotary Music Festival

The Rotary Club of St. John's Northwest has sponsored the Rotary Music Festival since 1989. The festival is an annual event held in St. John's which focuses on youth bands and choral groups. It provides a unique opportunity for students and music teachers to work with music clinicians who have international experience in their field. Participants also have the opportunity to perform before a live audience through a series of public concerts.

2005 marked the 17th year that our Club has sponsored the Rotary Music Festival. This year, there were 109 participating bands and choral groups, with about 4600 children involved. This included groups from Calgary, Manitoba, central and western Newfoundland, and Goose Bay, Labrador, as well as many groups from the greater St. John's area. In addition, 2 groups from Ottawa participated in a Festival workshop with our clinicians using video-conferencing technology. This was part of a national event on May 2nd, called Music Monday, which also involved a multi-location concert program through videoconferencing connecting St. John's, Ottawa and Burnaby, BC.

We've received many congratulatory and thank-you notes from music directors and clinicians over the past couple of weeks. I thought you might be interested in a sampling of the comments:

Your festival is such a positive force in the lives of those children and their teachers!
- R. Blatti - Columbus, Ohio (clinician)

I can't thank you enough for providing such a rich experience in my life. Every part of the festival was so well organized...
- R. Nace - Tacoma, Washington (clinician)

...congratulations on a super festival this year...Great clinicians - everything prompt, positive feelings about music!...a fantastic and professional job (as usual)...
- S. Carroll- Mount Pearl (teacher, music director)

Thank you so much for another wonderful year! The kids and I really enjoyed ourselves and I thought the adjudicators were fantastic. They worked very well with the students too.
- S. Andrews - Old Perlican (teacher, music director)

On the financial front, the Festival has an annual budget of about $42,000. This year, we brought in $14,572.00 at the concert Box Office, as well as $17,000 in registration fees from the groups. We were also successful in getting sponsorship funding from the Provincial Department of Education ($5000), Provincial Music ($1500), and the NLTA Music Council ($1400). Our own Ches Chard helps us get the best possible price on clinician travel arrangements, and Dave Fowler gives us a great discount on printing services. Aliant provides the hosting for the Festival website www.rotarymusicfestival.org.

Thank you to all who participated…volunteers, music teachers and students.
