Northwest Rotary Scholarship

In September 2003, our Rotary Club established a new scholarship at Memorial University of Newfoundland. It is valued at $1000 annually and will be awarded to a full time student beyond first year pursuing a B.A. or a B.Sc. with a major in one of the Social Sciences who has demonstrated a commitment to community service. The recipient of this scholarship will be a long-term resident of Newfoundland and Labrador who completed high school in this province and will have demonstrated scholarship standing. It will be awarded by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships and Financial Aid upon the joint recommendation of the Dean of Arts and the Dean of Science. The Scholarship will be presented at one of the regular meetings of the Rotary Club of St. John's Northwest and the recipient will be asked to speak about their goals and community service work.


2008-09 Winner - Debbie senior



The 2008-2009 recipient of the Northwest Rotary’s Scholarship, Ms. Debbie Senior, has earned a Bachelor of Science Joint Major in Economics and Statistics from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Debbie enjoyed spending her spare time volunteering at the University. She was an advertising representative for the MUN Delegation of the Rights and Democracy Network. A main project of this delegation was to raise awareness of water privatization concerns. She also re-established the Economics Society of Memorial University after several years of it being inactive and became the society president. The society was successful in holding various social events for students and holding economics clothing sales. The society has continued to be active after her leaving.

Debbie was raised in Red Harbour, a community on the Burin Peninsula of Newfoundland, and graduated from Marystown Central High School in 2004. Upon completion of high school, Debbie attended the Burin Campus College of the North Atlantic to complete the College-University Transfer Year. While there, Debbie volunteered for the Skills Work for Women Program. This program, under skills Canada, aims to raise awareness of non-traditional career options to high school females.

After completion of her degree in April 2009, Debbie has become a Senior Policy Analyst with the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development under the Strategic Partnership Secretariat. The Strategic Partnership is a unique, dynamic partnership of business, labour and government dedicated to improving the quality of life of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador through sustainable, balanced economic and social development. She is continuously searching for new volunteer experiences.

2006 Winner

2006 winner Susan Piercey (middle)

The 2006 recipient of Northwest Rotary's scholarship, Ms. Susan Piecey, is attending Memorial University, and studying towards a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Political Science. Susan is currently a volunteer with the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre and holds a part time job in the Education Department at MUN.

2006 Winner Susan Piercey was raised in Grand Bank, on the Burin Peninsula. She attended school at Partanna Academy, Lake Academy and John Burke High School. At that level, her major accomplishments include becoming a co-creator of the first John Burke High Art Club, participating in a 6 Month Exchange with Quebec, remaining a dedicated volunteer with St. Alban's Anglican Church, and becoming Valedictorian of the John Burke High Class of 2005.

2005 winner Cecily Pantin of St. John's with 2004-2005 President Lucy Dobbin

The 2005 recipient of Northwest Rotary's scholarship, Ms. Cecily Pantin, is a third year arts student at Memorial. She is currently completing a degree in political science with a minor in history and has plans to pursue a degree in international law after 2006.

Cecily has always been interested in both national and foreign affairs, in particular with the humanitarian work of organizations such as the United Nations.

Cecily is very active as a volunteer in the church community at St. Thomas' Anglican Church in St. John's. She has been a Sunday school teacher for the past 5 years for children ages 5-13, as well as a Vacation Bible School teacher. She has also worked with teenagers, as a youth leader for two Anglican Church retreats.

Cecily says that one of her greatest passions is dance, which she has been actively involved in for 16 years. Cecily is currently the liturgical dance instructor at St. Thomas'. She choreographs and teaches dance for use in the worship service, to a group of nine enthusiastic girls. She was also the choreographer and member of the directing team for a holiday musical the past two Christmas'. "Four Tickets To Christmas," was a family Christmas musical, put off for the entire community by three Anglican Churches. The cast varied in age from 5-70. Cecily says that it was such a wonderful experience to watch these people having fun and learning something they may have thought they would never do. It was a great success and an experience she will never forget.
