Archaeology at Ferryland, Newfoundland: The 2024 Field Season
Archaeological investigations in Ferryland, Newfoundland have been ongoing for more than three decades. My presentation provides a brief overview of the history and archaeology of this amazingly well-preserved 17th-century site, followed by details on the recent 2024 excavations.
Two areas of the site were targeted for the 2024 field season. The first area was along Ferryland’s inner harbour (or Pool), a location that requires increased attention due to the frequency of storm surges and high tides damaging the 17th-century waterfront. The second was further south beyond the current Pool Road and focussed on the early construction activities and operations associated with George Calvert’s initial colony (1621-1638) and David Kirke’s succeeding plantation (1638-1696).
