What's Going On?
In 2023 we partnered with The Rotary Club of Montreal on a water project in Zimbabwe. Our Rotary club managed the project. We met with community leaders to determine the best use of funds available and it was decided that the goal would be to replace broken water pipes through several villages near Tshelanyemba. People in the villages assisted in the project by digging the trenches needed to lay the water pipe. Over 17 kilometers of water pipe was laid and a company was hired to install a solar pump at the river. Several villages now have access to clean water, this will have a huge impact on the quality of life for the people in the area.

The 44 residents of Rotary Housing Inc received a little gift this week from our club to help make their Christmas a little brighter. Rotary Housing Inc was built in the late 80s by our club and is still managed by a Board of Directors comprised of our members. It is affordable housing for persons with disabilities, single parents, and seniors. Merry Christmas to all residents of Rotary Housing Inc!

We collected personal donations from our members and matched their generous giving with club funds to support two wonderful organizations this holiday season. Donations were made to the Murphy Centre and Thrive to support the work they are doing with those in need in our community.

The 2023 Aidan Maloney Young Professional Awards were presented at our November 21st meeting. This year's recipients are Keith White and Jeff Hillyard.

Keith and Jeff are both committed volunteers and leaders who use their talents and passion to make a significant difference in our community. We are fortunate to add them to our growing list of young professionals who have received this award.

Congratulations Keith and Jeff!

We are excited to announce that we collected over 1000 lbs of food and over $2800 in cash and gift cards on Saturday, October 28th during our annual Food Drive with Prince of Wales Collegiate High School in support of the Salvation Army Food Bank. THANK YOU to everyone who donated and thank you to Sobeys and Dominion stores for allowing us to collect at their locations. We have been doing this Food Drive for over 40 years and the demand on the food banks has never been higher, we are happy to have played a small role in helping The Salvation Army service the over 800 families they are currently helping per month.

Our Club has recently donated $8,500 to the Brother Rice Celtic Chef program.  Formerly know as the Brother Rice “Soup Club” (as featured in numerous news articles over the past few years)  - the Celtic Chefs, along with teachers at the school, create meals for students to have at lunch time, and to take home to their families for a healthy supper. This has proven extremely popular for the most vulnerable students and by being inclusive has lessened the stigma associated with accessing this type of assistance.   In addition to providing much needed meals for students, this program allows students to  gain skills such as meal preparation and leadership. It allows them to appreciate the role of community service and develop empathy for their classmates.  Our donation will allow for over 3,000 meals (100 per week x 30 weeks) to be prepared, as well as allow the Chefs to transition to a sustainable model for cutlery and flatware.

We have donated $5,000 to The Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre.   The NLSACPC provides a leadership role in listening to, believing, and supporting individuals who have experienced sexual violence. As a provincial Centre which deals exclusively with issues of sexual violence, they promote and facilitate social and systemic change.  Our funds will go toward training of staff and the expansion of their text based services to 24 hours a day. Visit their website for additional information: https://endsexualviolence.com
The Rotary Club of St. John's Northwest 2023 Annual High School Speak-Off was a great success! All the finalists did a wonderful job and it made for a very interesting event, with speeches on a range of different topics.

First place was awarded to Olivia Taylor from St. Kevin's High School and the runner-up was Eamon Fogwill from O'Donnell High School. Later this spring Olivia will spend four exciting days in Ottawa, with approximately 200 other outstanding senior high school students from across Canada.

Congratulations to all involved and we wish all the students who participated this year the very best of luck in their future endeavors.
