Buckmaster’s Circle Project – New Recreation Space for Children
In 2007, St. John’s Northwest Rotary is embarking on a "Special Project" supporting the development of an outdoor recreation space in the Buckmaster's Circle neighbourhood of St. John's. The site of the new park is a 4.6 acre undeveloped area right in the heart of the city's centre, where a neighbourhood of 1 sq km with over 240 children under the age of 14 years has no open air play space available for play.
In 2004 the area's residents participated in a process of public consultation about a proposed park development, led by the Grand Concourse Authority, and a concept plan for the new park was developed with the support of the City of St. John's. This concept plan includes defined spaces for active and passive recreation, and was approved by local residents and the City of St. John's, which has agreed to provide ongoing maintenance of the park after it is built. The city also agreed to provide half the funding of the park's construction cost, and challenged the Buckmaster's Circle Community Centre to raise the other half. That is where the Rotary Club of St. John's Northwest stepped in, providing the Buckmaster's Circle Community Centre with a commitment of seed funding of $50,000.
We are delighted to support the Buckmaster’s Circle Community Centre in this endeavor which is sure to have a positive impact on the community!
